The Irish 1000 Guineas has not been that special a guide of late but if we analysed results over a longer period of time, seven winners have followed up in the last 30 years. Katies, Al Bahathri and Sonic Lady struck successive victories here between 1984-1986 after Classic success at The Curragh followed by Kooyonga, Ridgewood Pearl, Crimplene and Attraction. Winter was even better in winning at The Curragh than at Newmarket and is likely to start at odds-on in her bid to emulate Attraction and also add the Coronation Stakes to her two Classic successes.

Of the big three European versions of the 1000 Guineas, the Newmarket version has wiped the floor with its Irish and French equivalents in recent years being responsible for nine of the last 14 winners and seven of those finished in the first six at Newmarket so that has to the first port of call. This season’s 1000 Guineas 1-2-3-4-5-6 were Winter, Rhododendron, Daban, Talaayeb, Fair Eva and Unforgettable Filly.

Winners of the 1000 Guineas had a desperate record up until Russian Rhythm completed the double in 2003 but she was quickly followed by Attraction 12 months later and Ghanaati and Sky Lantern in more recent years ago so that hoodoo has been well and truly broken.

14 of the last 17 winners were no bigger than 6/1 with eight starting favourite or joint market leader.

The French 1000 Guineas has held up okay given that it wouldn’t have the same representation and five of the last 22 Coronation Stakes winners previously finished second or third in that Classic. Ervedya also completed the double in 2015 becoming the first winner of the French 1000 Guineas to win the Coronation Stakes since Toro in 1957.

The French Guineas produced a surprise winner in Precieuse who had been beaten in four of her five career starts beforehand but the step up from 6f to a 1m made all the difference. It looked a poor renewal beforehand though highlighted by Sea Of Grace, who was only fifth in the Nell Gwyn.

There have been some surprise results down the years but this Group 1 affair for three-year-old fillies usually goes more or less the way of The Form Book and especially of late with 14 of the last 17 winners found at no bigger than 6/1 with eight starting favourite or joint market leader. Fallen For You was an unusual winner five years ago as she became the first filly to take a more softly-softly approach and bypass all the European Guineas since Balisada in 1999.

There has been a change over the last decade how Coronation Stakes winners fared as two-year-olds as eight of the last 13 winners had won a pattern race as a juvenile whereas the previous four had not. As far as trainer trends are concerned, Sir Michael Stoute has won four runnings, two ahead of Aidan O’Brien and John Gosden.
