After the Coventry, the Norfolk Stakes is the best two-year-old race at Royal Ascot for punters to get really stuck into with eight of the last 14 runnings going the way of the favourite or second-favourite.

It would take an exceptional set of circumstances for trends followers to nail their mast to a horse beaten last time out. Just two Norfolk Stakes winners since 1991 had tasted defeat on their previous start so it is much the best idea to concentrate on such runners of which there will be many. Therefore, to cut the parameters further, I suggest looking to those yet to taste defeat as 15 of the last 23 winners had perfect records entering the race and seven of the last 11 winners arrived here with the profile of one run and one win, Prince Of Lir being the latest last season. All six winners since 1997 that had run more than twice were beaten first time out.

15 of the last 23 winners had perfect records entering the race and seven of the last 11 winners arrived here with the profile of one run and one win.

This 5f Group 3 contest is very much for precocious types (last year’s winner was retired at the end of his 2yo campaign) and, as such, very few winners have made a serious impact the following season. Of winners since 1997, just five had previously been tried at further than 5f but that does include two of the last three winners, Baitha Alga and Waterloo Bridge.

The recent Roll of Honour of winning sires is packed with sprinters so it is no surprise that 18 of the last 21 winners were by stallions with a Sire Index of no bigger than 8.3f with seven of those being the produce of stallions with a Sire Index of less than 7f as there aren't too many of them. Windsor form has also come to the fore in recent seasons with five of the last 15 winners either winning or finishing second at the riverside track.

Richard Hannon Jnr got off the mark three years ago with Baitha Alga and supplied the second and third in 2015. His father secured victories with Niche (1992), Lucky Lionel (1995) and Baron's Pit (2002) in addition to saddling two runners-up going back to 1994 so Team Hannon have to be very much respected. Peter Chapple-Hyam has won this race on three occasions and also respect Mark Johnston who has won the Norfolk Stakes with Russian Valour (2003) and also supplied three seconds, The Last Lion being the latest last season. Also note William Haggas who has saddled two winners.
