The Wesley Ward-trained pair of Scat Daddy-sired fillies Acapulco and Lady Aurelia turned the last two runnings into one-filly races winning with such authority off the back of one previous start. Also successful with Jealous Again in 2009 and a runner-up in between his successes, therefore all eyes on Happy Like A Fool who, like Lady Aurelia, won her only start beforehand at Keeneland. Fairyland is another possible Ward-trained filly by Scat Daddy to be sent over for a 2yo race at the meeting.

Entering the race unbeaten or otherwise is neither here nor there but what is usually crucial is our selection won last time out as has been the case for 13 of the last 16 winners. Up until 2006 it was a case of follow the unbeaten fillies as six on the spin had proven successful but eight of the subsequent 11 winners had tasted defeat earlier in the season.

What is usually crucial is our selection won last time out as has been the case for 13 of the last 16 winners.

The National Stakes at Sandown has been a good guide but it was dominated by colts this season. The Marygate Stakes at York’s Dante Meeting is another fair pointer with Gilded (2006) and Ceiling Kitty (2012) completing the double, two more Marygate winners finished second and third in between and Tiggy Wiggy was runner-up in both races. This season’s 1-2 of Main Desire both look smart.

The Hannon stable have won five Queen Marys in total and Mick Channon’s record with juveniles at Royal Ascot passes the closest scrutiny and he has won the Queen Mary with Bint Allayl (1998), Queen's Logic (2001) and Flashy Wings (2005) and all three went on to win the Lowther Stakes and end up the season's champion two-year-old filly. In fact, his last 14 runners have produced three winners a second, third, fourth and fifth. Brian Meehan has trained a winner (Romantic Liaison) and a second (Shumoos) since 2002 so is another that knows what it takes.

This 5f sprint is a test for real speedsters so it is with little surprise that sires known for passing on their sprinting genes that have fared much the best. The last ten winners were sired by stallions with a Sire Index of between 6f and 8f.
